I teach at a title 1 school in a neighborhood where 26% of the people live below the poverty level. I began teaching in 2004 and have only taught at one school. This is a second career for me. Previously I was a computer programmer. Due to a death in my family, I stayed home for a year grieving. When it was time to go to work again, I decided I didn’t want to return to an office environment. I always wanted to be a teacher but the pay was so poor long ago. Through seventh grade I was playing ‘school’ with my dolls. I loved being their teacher. So I worked as a substitute to be sure it was where I wanted to go. And it was!
