I currently have twenty-three students in my inclusion classroom. I want to change my classroom environment and provide flexible seating so that students can work in an area that is comfortable for them. I have read numerous articles stating benefits to flexible seating. Research shows that flexible seating increases oxygen flow to the brain, increases blood flow throughout the body, and it increases core strength by allowing children to wobble, rock, or bounce. Flexible seating encourages students to find their best spot, stay calm, focused, and productive. I am a firm believer that little ones need brain breaks every 10-15 minutes. We do dance breaks and other activities often throughout our day together to keep students from becoming overwhelmed and stressed. I think flexible seating will make learning fun. It is extremely important that my students leave for the day stress free, loving school and happy to come the next morning. Kindergarten sets the tone for school. They either love school or dislike it and that decision is made while in kindergarten. I believe that the classroom environment should be conducive to open collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking. Kids are so involved with technology, internet, and game stations. When they enter kindergarten they are lacking critical thinking skills, problem solving skills, and do not know how to collaborate with others in a positive way. I think changing my classroom environment set-up will help these small children develop more skills that they need to be successful in life. I want my classroom environment to give students a comfortable, safe feeling. Many students have to be reached emotionally before you can teach them academically. They arrive to school stressed due to the home environment. I want them to be comfortable and stress free. I think flexible seating will help this happen.
