I have exceptional children in my learning community that will benefit greatly from having more comfortable seating options in our learning community, such as the balance balls and stools. I currently have Do-it-yourself seating, ottomans, carpets, and standard seating in the classroom. Some of my students love sitting on the carpet and would benefit greatly by having the lap desks to utilize. They move from the floor to their desks whenever they need to write information down. However, I want them to be able to sit where they would like and for the area to be functional for them, as well. Understanding one's cultural identity through literacy has always been a goal in my classroom! I want my students to see a part of themselves in the books they are reading. I want them to actively engage in reading through more nonfiction texts and autobiographies. My students need to have more positive influences in their lives and I hope to inspire this through reading. This is why I thought it was important to select books about the lives of figures in African-American history. There is a book about Jackie Robinson, an African-American baseball player, Venus and Serena Williams, African-American tennis players, Maya Angelou, an African-American poet, Louis Armstrong, an African-American musician during the Harlem Renaissance, and many more. From dancers to doctors and athletes to activists, my students will have the opportunity to read and explore the lives of many people that were children just like them!
