Going by the book in math is how notes are usually done. However, in my experience, students get a better grasp of the content when they are able to manipulate their notes with graphic organizers, Frayer models and an array of foldables designed specifically for each lesson. Students become familiar with Cornell Notetaking and are able to use this skill in high school and in college. Cornell notes teach students how to use questioning techniques to prepare for tests and summaries to get the overall understanding of the content. They can review and revise to focus on vocabulary terms that may be new to them. By creating an AVID Interactive notebook, students can be organized by having their notes, bell work, and practice problems all in the same place. Graph paper helps my students create their own coordinate planes, number lines, and be able to proficiently complete operations that require them to line up any of the numbers. Most students lack organizational skills; however an AVID Interactive notebook can help those students succeed in a class that most students struggle with.
