I hope that by exposing them to this novel they will gain the confidence and enthusiasm they need to read more books. At the beginning of the year, I tried reading the regular (nongraphic) novel with my class, yet I noticed the it was mostly the students who are reading close to grade level that were eager to participate. My struggling readers (about 2/3 of my class), however, were disconnected and not excited when it came time to read whole class. By having the graphic novel of "A Wrinkle in Time," my struggling readers who usually become frustrated when reading novels, will become more engaged, for the visuals and short dialogue will promote deeper levels of comprehension. If my students are better able to comprehend what they have read, then our class discussions about the book will be much more meaningful due to the higher levels of participation.
