In my science class, my students DO science. This means that they practice science and learn concepts through hands on models, labs, and other activities. I want my students to be able to critical think through experiments and have a greater meaning as to how biology affects their everyday life. Through lab materials such as blood pressure cuffs, gel electrophoresis chambers, and microscope slides, students are equipped with materials to actively use science to solve problems. By practicing science hands-on, students are better able to internalize what they are learning. Furthermore, through these labs I hope to increase engagement in biology and all STEM fields. Students are exposed to college-level lab procedures and techniques, preparing them for experiences after high school. My students are also highly motivated by competition! I like to motivate students to think fast and critically through class competitions and incentives. Through class competitions, students learn how to quickly think through problems and explain their answers. They also are held accountable to be team players, ultimately creating a collaborative classroom environment.
