Financial literacy is an important topic in school that should be learned and taught at an early age. I plan on making this subject fun and hands-on by creating a grocery store in my dramatic play center using the freestanding Melissa and Doug Grocery Store. In this play center, the children will develop an awareness that money is needed when purchasing the canned goods, boxed cereals, and other market veggies and fruits. They will also practice coin recognition and value identification when handling the money in their wallets and purses. If this project is funded, the freestanding grocery store will bring a realistic approach to learning financial literacy. The children will enjoy interacting, shopping, and paying for their food. They will also be practicing communication skills, life skills, classification, and developing their vocabulary all while playing in our very own grocery store.
