In my day, we learned math facts by "drill and kill" with flashcards. But I've been following a teacher who calls herself "The Recovering Traditionalist" (Christina Tondevold). She's been enlightening my mind to what number sense really is, and that fluency is so much more than speed. Flexibility in math thinking is so important - as is learning to communicate our ideas.
