If students are going to return safely to in-person learning in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic, they are going to need individualized kits for any hands-on materials (because sharing materials increases the risk of virus transmission.) General classroom music at the elementary level until now has involved frequent distribution of shared classroom percussion instruments from a cart that is taken from classroom to classroom by the teacher. It is time to move away from this model towards the concept of individual music kits that are reserved solely for the use of one student. Egg shakers are low cost, easy to play, and can serve as an excellent basis for a personal classroom music kit. Egg shakers are great tools for learning to keep a steady beat, create orchestral textures, and explore musical dynamics.
