The other day I was lying in bed thinking about my students. Their needs, interests, tough circumstances, and silly characteristics all come to mind. I started daydreaming about how I can leave my mark on this group, how I can inspire these kiddos. Would you mind walking in my daydream with me? I want to give my students a gift. A gift that will extend far beyond this year, far beyond these 21 kiddos. I want this gift to reach the heart, and be the pulse of room 503 for years to come. What could I possibly give these students that would invoke so much impact? Books. Simple as that. Hundreds. A classroom library that puts the one I currently have to shame. I’m talking 3rd-7th grade chapter books for all levels of readers, picture books galore, and graphic novels (even ones that don’t include underpants). I want my room to scream, “READING IS FOR EVERYONE!” And most of all, I want my students to find themselves through the adventures, trials, and conflict of stories. In January, when my students come back from Christmas break, I want them to walk into a brand-new classroom. One that isn’t arranged perfectly and dressed to the nines (pun intended... my last name is Nine). Just a classroom filled with books for EVERY reader. A classroom with a culture of reading. Now, wouldn’t that be something? I have a hunch that it wouldn’t only enhance my students’ reading and writing abilities, but it would also spark new interests, passions, and habits into the lives of these 4th grade kiddos.
