These daily math fluency lessons will give structure to number sense instruction. My young mathematicians will be able to view a demonstration rekenrek...a tool with 2 rows of 10 beads. 5 are red, and 5 are white, showing the structure of 5+ some more. Using the number strings (series of equations) provided, students will begin to see how numbers are structured. For example, after pushing over 5+0 they will see 5 red beads. Then pushing 5+1 will show 5 reds and 1 white equals six. Voila...visual th! The same concept applies to ten frames. With five boxes on the bottom and 5 on the top, students can see 5 dots on top and some more on the bottom. They quickly learn that a full top row and one more is 6. This, coupled with the pocket chart showing the number 5, then the number 6 builds the idea of one more.
