Adding flexible seating options isn’t as much about the furniture as it is about how it changes the culture of the classroom. My students have asked for a couch where they can cozy up together to share books. It’s kind of hard to leap over the desks. Soft chairs that can go anywhere encourage students to work with different students throughout the day and collaborate on projects in all curricular areas. Many students in my classroom have special needs academically, socially and even sensorial sensitivities. My goal is to begin the process of removing traditional desks and chairs and create a project-based environment where student have a choice in where they work, how they work, and who they work with.
