I believe that as students continue their reading journeys, they should be able to find relatable materials in class that were personally selected for them and by them, with the aid of their teachers! They show more passion and drive when they read books self-selected and pre-selected just for them and grow more as readers! My class is broken up into 4 groups! I want the students to all to be able to read books that are on their level, but also interesting, fun and relatable to read. I talked to my students and asked each group what type of books they would like to read to get an understanding of where their minds were and where I could take them. Additionally, we have already started reading similar books in class that the students thoroughly enjoy! One of my groups chose The Magic Tree House series to read! I really like these books because there is something for everyone in them! This is one of my larger groups, so I love that all the kids in the group can find a connection with the series, be it Jack's love of science or his sense of responsibility, Annie's curiosity and kindness, or the adventures as a whole! My other larger group has more suspense-seeking students in it! I actually suggested the Box Car Children series to them on a whim. As we were talking more about what they wanted to get out of the reading, I knew they would love this series! The challenge for my advanced group will be to broaden their horizons! I picked out classics for them to read: A Wrinkle in Time, Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry, to start! I want to work with them on these novels, so they will have broadening perspectives of the world!
