Due to the wide range of academic levels and different types of learners in our classroom we have to improvise daily and use non-conventional materials as manipulatives. For example we use cooking beans as counters. Some of our students are tactile learners. They focus more easily with objects to manipulate instead of always using paper and pencil. When our students are solving math problems, we encourage them to draw or build a representation. The dry erase paddles will be used daily during Math. Students will use them to solve problems, record their findings and share their thinking. Snap cubes will be used to teach counting, groupings, measurement, patterns and place value. Students can use the counters when needed to help solve addition and subtraction problems. The Judy clock will be used to teach time. Having a class set will enable students the ability to practice moving the hands around to see the rotation of minutes and hours. The plastic coins and paper money will be used to teach the value of each coin and bill. Students will use the money to sort and create different quantities. Manipulatives will support our students greatly when engaging in independent and group work. Research has proven that the use of manipulatives increases student engagement and interest for Mathematics.
