With just a few weeks into the new school year, I have already fallen in love with my kindergartners. I see their enthusiasm for learning, their nature to questions everything around them. Our school is a Title I school, and about 80% of my students are English Language Learners. Flexible seating is a tool many teachers are using in the classroom to enhance academic achievement. Some of the things used are special cushions where students can wiggle and move without disrupting others. In addition, the Fidget Bands help decrease tapping feet and getting out of their working spaces. These unconventional seating tools aid students to enhance behavior, and in turn, strengthen focus and maximize their learning. By donating the Wobble Cushions and Fidget Bands, my students will be able to move while they learn and this will help them increase their focus and ultimately academic achievement. When students are sitting they can use the Fidget Bands to wiggle their feel while they work, and because their bodies are in motion, their focus will increase. The Wobbly Cushions will also help students wiggle in their chair without interfering with their learning or the learning of others My students are playful, spontaneous and inquisitive. They are also learning how to interact with each other and how to be polite, respectful, responsible, and caring. Having these items in my classroom will help them practice sharing and taking turns. One of my goals is to get my kindergartners ready for first grade, but also to get them to practice those socials skills of sharing and taking turns. We look forward to writing those thank you notes with pictures of this group of new readers enjoying their cushions and flexing the bands while they read.
