Diversity is the state of being diverse, understanding that each individual is unique and recognizing individual differences. Some of my students wear glasses, some do not. Some are African-American, Hispanic or Mixed. Others are adopted or live with grandma and grandpa. Some come from single parent homes, while others spend half the time at their mothers and the other half with their fathers. Some students have speech disorders or wear hearing aids. It is important that I intentionally and meaningfully promote diversity and inclusion in the classroom. I will be able to empower my students by giving them something tangible to connect with.
The materials that I have requested will allow the children to love themselves and have pride in who they are where they are from. The books that I requested will allow children to identify with the multicultural characters (Mixed, Hispanic, African-American) that they will see as they turn every page. Children with different family structures will gravitate towards those books and also engage them in creating meaningful conversations and open dialogue. Others might enjoy reading about children who are like them and wear glasses, have big curly hair or different shades of skin.
Children learn through play. The World People Leggo Set will allow children to explore family dynamics through play. It will invite them to role play different family structures. My classroom has a set of dolls that only include one race. The Multicultural dolls will allow my children to celebrate diversity and also give them a sense of pride. It will encourage role play that is similar to their household makeup. The Children of the World and Families Poster Pack will help my student visually see themselves in the classroom. When my students learn to love themselves, they then will be able to love others.
