I teach 7th and 8th grade special education, self-contained reading and language arts. I have small groups of students in each class. Each class is 90 minutes long, and it gives me a lot of time to spend with my students. I get to know each one personally throughout that time, and it only motivates me more to do the best that I can for them. I want my students to experience the love of reading. To begin class every day, we read independently. During this time, I conference with students independently. I want to hear their fluency and have a conversation with them about their books. Most importantly, I want them to know that I am interested in their reading lives. My students deserve to have relevant, interesting books. Unfortunately, my library does not best meet my students' needs at this point. I want them to have access to as many wonderful books as possible, as well as them being on their independent reading level. My students' independent reading levels range from 2nd-6th grade, and this is often a trigger for their low confidence in reading. I have seen my students interested in books such as the "I Survived", "Harry Potter", and definitely the "Goosebumps" series; it's disheartening not to be able to have these books accessible to my students. I am asking for eight different boxed sets of series books including The Baby-Sitters Club Graphix, and the 39 Clues Complete Boxed Set. I want them to love their independent reading time, look forward to it every day, and above all, grow a love for reading.
