Reading is encouraged in my classroom, but that can be difficult for students who cannot connect to the text they read. Therefore, I would like more diverse chapter books for my classroom library. Books that not only can my students relate to the main character, but also books that will intrigue us to learn more about other cultures. I chose books that have Indigenous, African American, Latino, Indian, Asian, etc as main characters. Main characters that look like us and our friends. These books are mirrors that reflect us as characters and windows that allow for opportunities to learn about others. Students are able to take books home to share with their families. These books are also a great opportunity to reinforce reading strategies that we learn daily. My goal is to encourage reading by offering more diverse choices.
