I have a very active group of second graders this school year. They are energetic, curious, and love to work together in pairs and small groups. My students always enjoy the activities I provide that include choice and the option of sitting in a different location in the room other than their desks. They always ask for more recess and complain there is never enough time for being active. Regardless of the learning style, it is hard to be a second grader and have to sit still all day in the same desk without working together with their classmates and being able to collaborate. Research shows that flexible seating works for all learning styles, and especially for the ADHD students that need to fidget and move a little more than the average student. "An active mind cannot exist in an inactive body." ~George S. Patton With more emphasis put on increasing instructional time at such a young age, students often lose focus quickly having to sit at the same desk all day, every day. My students will enjoy being able to choose from these new seating options in the classroom during the instructional day as well as independent reading time and working with a partner. The 20 seat sacks will help all of the learning styles in my classroom to stay more organized and easily have all necessary materials at their fingertips without the frustration of not knowing where their needed materials are. After talking with the teachers in our building that have organized classroom libraries, chair pockets, and flexible seating, and hearing how it has positively affected the organization, behaviors, and listening skills among all learning styles, I would like to begin a classroom makeover for my classroom in hopes of producing more engaged and active learners!
