Being a teenager and trying to fit in socially can be challenging and difficult for some. I had the opportunity to help with a program called ASPPIRE which is teaching social skills to adults on the Autism Spectrum. This experience has led me to believe that the skills taught would be good for many teens, not just those on the spectrum. With that in mind, I have started an after school program that would be for students who may need a little extra support in the area of social skills. Our mission is to strive to improve the quality of life for students with social challenges by providing a wide range of strategies to meet the specific needs of each individual. The program is designed to have a 10 minute topic discussion, with the remainder of the time for students to have fun socializing, and building relationships. Snacks are always provided (currently 100% teacher donation) Some of the topics to be discussed are: Compromises/RSVP/Social Outing, Emotions, Conversation skills/ including phone skills, Self-awareness, Making friends, Stress and anxiety, Social networking and safety Activities are built around student ideas, but have included: Chess/checker tournaments, game day, movies, crafts, cooking, outings for bowling, corn mazes, local community events. (Students make calls to set up activities and find costs.) Most recent comments from students: "I have never really had friends before. I love this!" "I love it!" "You can learn how to get more friends when you are grown up and how to deal with things" "I love the after school program! We learn coping skills and I talk to my new friends on the weekends too!" "I learned to talk to friends on the phone"
