Unlike other classes where technology is used to learn how to use it for the benefit of future use, in my English as a New Language class my students use technology to access knowledge in a new to them language. Luckily, there are so many digital resources they can use to speed up the process of learning, by overcoming language barriers. Often, by the time a student finds one definition in a printed dictionary, a student with an iPad can translate whole pages, find illustrations, synonyms, and create usage examples. Technology serves students by empowering them, and I want to empower my English language learners. With new over-the-ear headphones, students can work in small groups with immersive reading apps, listening to authentic English pronunciation. 9.7-inch iPads will be used to translate instructions, texts and live speech on the spot. Sony MDR-ZX110 Noise Cancelling headphones will let my students to work on assignments with audio recordings appropriate to their own language development levels while in the same room. TIME Edge for grades 6+ provides students with a variety of texts and articles, that are relevant to my students, and are adopted to my students' language needs with accent on academic and content vocabulary.
