My students are from a low-income, urban area in MA. 98% of them speak Spanish at home, 97% receive free lunch, and the majority of them have little to no background knowledge of the world. Many of my students, who read below grade level, struggle with attention problems, hyperactivity, developmental delays, and various levels of neglect. I've found that they really relate to the main character in The Lightning Thief.
