If Loconoma Valley High School had a basketball hoop and some basketballs, it would not only be an opportunity for some lively students to accrue PE hours, it would be a great motivator for some of them to complete their academic work. My students relish the chance to go outside when their work is up-to-date and have asked if there is any way we might obtain a basketball hoop. Basketball is also a great way to foster teamwork and mutual respect among at-risk teens. Loconoma Valley High School currently has no PE facility and no PE equipment. Students do a lot of walking in order to accrue hours for PE credit. However, there are quite a few of our group that love basketball and would be motivated by the opportunity to play some ball on a daily basis. Besides the added physical activity, basketball would afford us a chance to engage in a healthy sport as a group and provide us with a much-needed outlet for pent-up energy and, admittedly, frustration about academic pursuits. I think our own hoop and balls would make a big positive change in attitudes in our class.
