As a special education teacher, I focus on helping my 3rd, 4th, and 5th-grade students grow in their reading level and interest. The valuable reading programs, I use are "Hill-Rap" and "Corrective Reading" to help them learn how to read! Although, my students mostly who are boys don't always find the program stories interesting. While my students practice reading short stories at their individual level, they are very eager to challenge themselves to read "chapter books". However, my students need more teacher support to read the text at this level. Last year, I started using the "I Survived" Book Series" with my 4th-grade students also being all boys. My small group read "I Survived Hurricane Katrina" and were quickly "hooked" and motivated to read, discuss, and think deeply about what they read with text near grade level. My hope is to help motivate my students to find reading "engaging and interesting" by using the "I Survived" chapter books and reading program lesson stories together! My project will help fund enough "I Survived" book series for all of my older grade students to have a copy during our small reading group time. The "I Survived" Book Series allows them to read 4th or 5th-grade level text about historical events from a child's perspective that they can relate too. The "I Survived" Books Series has many ways to help my students with picture support and engaging content text. The most exciting part as a teacher will be is to help my students have many opportunities to grow in their reading level and overall confidence! THEY WANT TO READ! I want to give them ways to grow and be successful with funding support for this project! I greatly appreciate all of your generous and thoughtful support for my students!!!
