I am an ELL Specialist in Portland, Maine. There are about 40 students in Grades K-5 on my case load. They come from many different countries and speak many different languages. Because they only make up 30% of our school, compared to other schools in our district that are at 60%, we do not receive any additional funding from Title 1. That is very difficult for our students. There is no additional help or supplies that other schools can purchase with Federal funds. One thing that has been very very successful has been the READ 180 program from Scholastic. I have had students who are new to the country gain three or fours years growth with the program. Part of the program is done on computers. The other part is reading books and small group instruction. Because the small group lessons are now available online, it is easiest to present via Apple TV. Unfortunately we only have three Apple TVs in our whole school, so I cannot possibly use one every day.
