Our classroom library is in desperate need of an overhaul. I have taught for eleven years and get a few new books each year, but it's time for quite a bit more. Madras Elementary has about 1/3 students white, 1/3 students Latinx, and 1/3 students Native American. However, my classroom library does not reflect the students that are in the classroom. Characters are predominantly white. I have requested books with diverse characters as well as books from the Oregon Battle of the Books list and social emotional learning books. I am excited to have my kids come back in the fall with an updated library that they can see themselves in, have more choice, and hopefully encourage them to participate in OBOB.
