This project will be helping students learn about events that have had a significant impact in history presented in an engaging way! Historical novels provide students an avenue to learn about historical events in a more engaging approach than they would from their history textbooks on the same topics. Books, like this one, help enhance the love for reading and history that I strive to create. I got various student comments like, "I didn’t think learning about history could be this interesting,” and “can we please read one more chapter.” The novel "Refugee" powerfully connects the perils of refugees’ past and the difficulty of refugees’ present in a timely story. This book includes figurative language, lots of connections between the characters, historically accurate details that could be explored much further, connections with modern issues regarding refugees, and so much more. As we read the e-book this year, I realized that with the right reading materials I could definitely increase my students love in reading and learning about important historical events. I truly have never seen a class so engaged and emotionally invested in a historical novel as they are right now!
