My classroom is full of cantankerous and excited orators engaged in the critical interpretation of persuasive messages: from slam poets to presidential candidates; from advertisements to music videos. An understanding of the formative power of media has taught my students the importance of constructing their own media messages to ensure no one tells their story but themselves. Students are beginning to gear up now for a unit on the critical analysis of media messages, from Kennedy and Nixon debating about Communism to YouTube viral video phenomena. Given their direct exposure to media every day, my students will undoubtedly take a deep interest in this unit. To culminate the unit, I believe these students should have the opportunity to create media of their own.
