What is my culture and how is it similar and different from others in the world? This is the essential question we are focusing on in third grade. To help explore this, my students have become pen pals with other students from an international school in Bangkok, Thailand. Student's communication with their pen pal will lead them to create a culminating project that will be presented at a cultural night at the end of the year. In addition to the information that students glean from their pen pal, one source I would like them to be able to use is the book, Children Just Like Me, by Anabel and Barnabas Kindersley. Children Just Like Me is an informational text that includes pictures and information about children from different cultures around the world. The book highlights 44 children in 36 different countries. Children Just Like Me, outlines the similarities and differences of children from across the globe. It delves into how different children enjoy spending their free time, the types of food they eat, the way they dress, and the kinds of homes they live in. This book will open up new doors and windows of possibilities for my students. It will foster curiosity and help students understand more about the world around them.
