My goal is to use Project Based Learning, so my students can take charge of their own learning and stay engaged from the driving question through the final product. Students will use the inquiry process and collaborative groups to investigate the popular tradition of gingerbread. My students will be using PBL to create a Gingerbread Village that will be used to benefit the charity “Warmth for Warriors”. Students will use The Gingerbread Man, The Gingerbread Boy and the Hansel and Gretel to create new versions of the fables using their Stop Motion App. They will use the Advanced Geometry Books for Kids to incorporate geometry into the design of the village. They will incorporate math skills such as 3-D shapes, nets, area, surface area, perimeter, and volume while creating their projects. Each student will create their own gingerbread house, building or castle. Students will cover the table with the wax paper, and begin with a round cake plate each. They will use the graham crackers, powdered sugar and cream of tarter to construct their houses. Students will use the hard Christmas candy, fruit loops, pinwheels and other candies to decorate their houses and buildings. They will use the ice cream cones and green food coloring to make trees, and the cookies to make benches, sleds and bridges. They will use cereal and other candy to make paths between each house to create the village. Students will use the coconut for snow across the village. Students will have a drop-box donation for the Warmth for Warriors charity. They will invite their families, community members, other classes, teachers and principals to view the village and donate hats and gloves. They will give a candy cane to each person that visits the village.
