My high school students attend school in a low-income area of Washington D.C. All of my students receive special education services, meaning that many of them have disabilities that make it difficult for them to focus, process information, and/or manage their emotional response. On average, they read on a 4th grade level, and find reading to be a very frustrating experience. They are full of life, and eager to learn, and get easily carried away by stories and classroom debates. However, they don't have access to the kinds of books they need to experience the power of the written word, or to push them to a higher reading level, which they desperately need in order to succeed in school, and in life.

About my class
