The ukulele is "a tool students can always go back to when applying different musical concepts. Using the ukulele as a fundamental instrument, students can springboard their musical education from the very beginning, encouraging our young students to become engaged self-motivated learners and proud musicians." (Shelbi Busche, music educator) Beyond the benefits in music class, playing a musical instrument helps develop fine motor and spacial reasoning skills. These are skills that are applicable to a myriad of situations in everyday life. Learning to play any instrument also has been proven to improve higher level thinking skills. While not all students have the opportunity to play a band instrument, every student has music class once per week. Adding ukuleles to the music curriculum will allow everyone the chance to broaden their skills.
