My students deserve to see themselves in our materials and to learn about cultures and communities different from their own. I have a responsibility, especially as a white teacher, to support my students of color and to educate my white students to recognize injustice and to be allies and advocates alongside their classmates of color. Our classroom needs to reflect the learners in it, as well as the world outside of it. These materials will be used to develop community through read-alouds that accompany curriculum. They will be used to support identity development, empathy building, and an understanding of equity.
