Science Olympiad consists of a team of up to fifteen students. The team competes in twenty-three events that include earth science, biology, chemistry, physics, and engineering. Science Olympiad is designed to increase a student’s interest in STEM fields and provide recognition for outstanding achievement in team events. One type of contest is to build or construct a device, take it to the contest and have it evaluated. An example is Mousetrap Vehicle in which teams design, build, and test a vehicle using one or two snap mouse traps as the sole means of propulsion to push a paper cup forward, reverse direction and stop as close as possible to a vehicle target point. Often the weight of the device is part of the scoring formula. Usually the results are better if the device is light. One of the problems that our team has is that in order to make things light we need to use balsa or basswood. These are very light woods and our tools often crush rather than saw or cut them because the tools are made for much stronger materials. The Dremel rotary tool would allow students to use the balsa and basswood to construct lighter projects and give them a better chance to succeed. The multi-meter will be used by students as they construct devices to meet specifications and will be used by students in circuit lab.
