Sand or water is available to the children each day. This is a very popular center in our pre-k classroom. A sand/water table will provide all students with better opportunities for exploratory play to enhance their social skills, sensory skills, scientific concepts, and language development. In the sensory table, students focus on the process of playing with the sand and water instead of trying to create an end product. Students will have creative learning experiences each time they play in the sensory table. Teachers can be creative, too. We will add materials that relate to the theme or lesson; for example adding leaves and pine cones to the sand table during the fall unit. We always include access to materials like measuring cups, ladles, funnels, sifters, colanders, or small manipulatives like plastic animals.
