Very frequently Special Education students' abilities are underestimated. Coding is a Twenty-First Century skill that can be applied to all subject areas. It teaches “soft skills” such as perseverance and encompasses all of the four Cs of the Common Core Standards: Collaboration, Communication, Creativity and Critical Thinking. By learning to code using Dot and Dash, my students will be able master the Twenty-First Century skills necessary for them to be competitive as they further their education and prepare for future career options. Students will use Wonder and/or Blockly languages to work collaboratively and design projects while learning about coding basics. The culmination of this project would be to have the students enter a local coding competition. Doing this, would provide them with the opportunity to interact with their peers and excel.
