Our class project is to use the propagation of common houseplants to create learning across the curriculum. We will be purchasing several houseplants and re-potting cuttings and/or new growth as separate plants. We will be practicing our knowledge of science by reading and educating ourselves about plant care and propagation. We will implement watering, potting, appropriate pot size, correct soil types, and different methods of propagating plants. We will also monitor the effects of positivity by speaking kindly to our plants and one another while in the classroom. In order to utilize our math skills, our plan is to sell our mature plants and create an educational, small business opportunity. We will have the opportunity to practice functional math skills such as counting, rounding, banking, cost, and profit within our business. The class will also generalize our previously learned skills in the community by shopping for all supplies and needs during our weekly Community Based Instruction trips. We wish to honor our former Agriscience teacher, Alice DuBois, who made it her mission to include students with special needs into the Agriscience program, as formal members of the FFA. Her love and support of diversity was contagious! D’s Seeds—she is the seeds from which we bloomed. It is our desire to continue to nurture her beautiful garden. We love and miss you Mrs. D! You are forever in our hearts!
