My students are quite the diverse bunch of emerging teenagers, with backgrounds ranging from the United States and Latin America to the Middle East and Africa. Their families represent a large representation of the city's immigrant population. These unique perspectives foster so much intellectual curiosity and liveliness. Despite this vivacity, our school in a community in New York has a high poverty rate, from which perpetuates a cycle of the achievement gap and overall low expectations for achievement. Moreover, since state standardized testing places much more focus on Mathematics and Reading, Social Studies instruction has been de-emphasized, especially in grades K-8, throughout our city.
