Students from impoverished home settings struggle with rich vocabulary, thus, limiting their fluency of words both orally and in writing. A high percentage of students attending my school live in temporary shelters, housing projects and foster care homes. Yet, though their plight at home may be challenging, they highly value enhancing their learning via participation in literature circles. Their next choice of book selections include reading Firefly Code, Ghost and A Girl Who Could Not Dream. Reading these novels provide them with a wealth of vocabulary experiences and skill sets that lend themselves to integrate the speaking, listening, writing, reading skills and generates additional opportunities for peer learning. More importantly, the creation of such text connections and applications within literature circles serve to empower each child with meaningful experiences that transfer into a life-long treasure of word concepts and proper usage.
