For almost 20 years, I have served youth in the inner cities of Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. What I love most about being a servant to students who are deemed marginalized is being able to be a beacon of light when they have experience great amounts of trauma and dysfunction. Whether it has been homelessness, drug and physical abuse or generational mental illnesses, I have witnessed many of my students fall through the cracks because of lack of social emotional learning (SEL) and overall wellness offered in their communities. Through this professional development opportunity with Breathe For Change, I will be able to become a certified social emotional learning facilitator and trauma-informed yoga instructor. For the past 5 years, I have taught elementary school students with moderate to severe disabilities. These disabilities have ranged from autism, ADHD, emotional and intellectual disabilities. I began incorporating yoga and SEL into my teaching and have seen a huge shift in behavior and academic performance. With this certification, I will be able to master my practice as well as design and lead professional developments for my colleagues, parents and communities that need it the most.
