I am a 5th grade Spanish Immersion teacher. I am trying to establish a classroom library to provide increased opportunities for my students to engage in reading throughout their school day as well as at home. As this program is still relatively new, especially in the upper grade levels, we have a limited supply of reading material in Spanish. My goal is to establish a wide range of reading materials, across various genres, including both fiction and non-fiction. Providing choices across multiple areas helps promote advanced reading and writing skills and enhances learning in other areas as well. "No single literacy activity has a more positive effect on students' comprehension, vocabulary knowledge, spelling, writing ability, and overall academic achievement than free voluntary reading." (Stephen Krashen, from The Power of Reading) The funds will be used to buy books in Spanish. My classroom library is in desperate need of additional materials. I am hoping to establish an extensive library across multiple reading levels and genres to promote reading in class and at home. As reading in Spanish is an integral part of the Immersion curriculum, it is vital for me to provide students with multiple reading options, as borrowing books from the library or other classrooms is difficult due to limited resources.
