I have requested some weighted lap blankets as well as soft weighted medicine balls as these were recommended by our school occupational therapist to help soothe and calm students. I also requested wobble seats for the students to use in chairs or on the morning meeting rug. I would love some fidget pencil toppers to add to my "toolbox" of supports. Having researched, I found that the toppers that students can spin and manipulate work to help keep focus without becoming a distraction. I have also included a book of movement activities to incorporate during our community building time in the classroom. Students will also have a chance to safely kick their legs without risk of kicking others under tables during meals and group learning with the stretchy bands that attach to the front of student chairs. In my therapeutic classroom, my students often seek sensory input but don't always know safe ways to have their physical needs met and still be engaged in learning. My goal is to teach self-regulation through some tools that students can choose to use as needed throughout the school day. When students find ways to be successful, it increases their self-esteem and gives them hope for their own futures.
