I want to provide my 6th gr. math students with real-world, hands-on math experiences to help them improve and develop math skills. It is essential for students to know where we were yesterday, what we are doing currently, and where we expect to go in the future with our math learning. I use my students' lives and our vernacular environment to help my students make deeper connections to the math we are learning every day. My 6th gr. students have already started to learn about ratios, rates, and unit rates as well as beginning financial literacy. I use picture books and newspaper stories, board games, art projects, and video games to help my students learn basic math skills and overlay these skills on real-world problem-solving.
