All students typically read non-fiction at least 1-2 grade levels below their actual reading level. This is primarily due to lack of exposure. I want to close this gap by having non-fiction reading materials that are written at their interest level and help them learn the skills necessary to be successful in Science, Social Studies and their future. Reading weekly from Scholastic Scope and practicing non-fiction reading skills will help raise their non-fiction reading levels. The reading materials used in my class need to make a huge impact because most of my students do not read enough or at all outside of the classroom. My students are curious and bright. We in the Language Arts department are working to build a literacy foundation that will carry them through high school and beyond.
