The digital divide has especially far-reaching consequences when it comes to education. For students in low-income schools like my students, inadequate access to technology can hinder them from accessing crucial information necessary to be successful in today’s economy. And while “smart phones” have helped to slightly bridge the divide, students like mine from lower socioeconomic households are more likely to not have access the high-speed internet (Pew Internet & American Life Project, 2012). The requested materials will be used to assist students with identifying career paths, confirm existing choices, or narrow the number of career alternatives considered. Specifically, my students will use the laptop to access the school’s high-speed internet system to build their educational skills and career interest portfolios. The copier paper will be used to print the results and the binders will be used to store the portfolios. At the end of each semester, my students will use the laptop to research colleges, technical schools, universities, private business, government agencies, and labor organizations to become aware of what is projected to be in high demand in coming years. Additionally, the laptop will allow me to offer my students science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) educational and occupational goals. As a School Counselor at a school that is pursuing STEM knowledge and skills, accessing high-speed internet with the laptop will support STEM career development strategies.
