My Kindergarten students spend most of the day transitioning between the carpet and their desks. Most of the whole group lessons take place on the carpet because it is easier to engage the students and refocus their attention during a lesson if they are close to the teacher. Kindergarten students need the carpet space to engage in mathematics with manipulatives. The lessons and activities that take place on the carpet are an essential component to my Kindergarten students' learning experience. Some of our daily carpet activities include Mathematics, Phonics and Writing mini lessons during Language Arts, and classroom playtime with puzzles and Legos. The carpet that is currently in use in our classroom is at least 9 to 10 years old and no matter how much it gets cleaned, it does not help. Having a carpet where all my students can sit comfortably in a clean area will help them stay more focused during my lessons and it will help me deliver instruction in a more effective way by being able to refocus students' attention when needed. A carpet will clearly delineate seating areas and will help my Kindergarten students know where to sit during lessons and activities. It will help with classroom management as well. Having this carpet in our classroom will save invaluable time, as energy can be focused into the lesson rather than into directing and redirecting students on where they should sit and keep their attention as they will not be pulling on all the loose ends of the carpet. It will also enhance the look of our classroom environment! This carpet will have a lasting impact throughout the school year and in years to come!
