By having more comfortable seating options available, students are active participants in their learning and are engaged throughout the day. Two years ago I started using flexible seating in my classroom. I saw an immediate change in behavior as well as engagement. Poor choices in the classroom and outside decreased significantly. Kids were more willing to be engaged with peers they normally would not have engaged with, the "good kid who can seat next to anyone", now had a choice in where they think their own learning would benefit without being the default kid having to sit next to the misbehaving one. The students who have challenges sitting still and not moving, were now given permission to and encouraged to do so. Students were given choice. They see their potential in having a say in their education. They are learning social and emotional skills by self monitoring their behavior and their learning. They are thriving. With this Donors Choose project, I would like to give my students more options for learning by choosing where they can sit to be most successful in the classroom. We can use the stadium chairs and take our learning outside. We can use the tractor chairs in class as an alternative to the traditional plastic ones. And the stools will give us a chance to wiggle while we work.
