Many of my 7th grade students were reluctant readers... until recently! Here's why...my school is piloting an independent reading period in the morning. Yes, you read that correctly, middle school students in the city of Philadelphia sit quietly with a book for a half hour every morning and immerse themselves in reading. During this independent reading, my students are reading high interest reading material to improve their independent reading levels, while simultaneously fostering a fondness for reading. Because many of my 7th graders had reading experiences that consisted of reading material that was forced upon them and/or was too difficult to read independently, many of them were very apprehensive about this reading period. For weeks, I said over and over again that the only way to become a better reading is simply by reading and kept encouraging students to give this reading time a chance. Thankfully, they gave it a chance and many of them are hooked.
