My ultimate goal is to have seven whiteboard tables in my classroom to promote group collaboration while exploring the concepts in Algebra 2. These requested two markerboard activity tables will help begin the process of reaching this goal. The tables will serve two main purposes. First, having students work in groups helps strengthen their ability to talk about the math. Being able to talk about math helps support their understanding of the content rather than just memorizing a procedure. Having the whiteboard already in front of them saves some time from passing out supplies and helps maintain a structured classroom environment. Secondly, these are not just any tables, but are whiteboard tables. Often students lack the confidence to make an attempt at a math problem they are not familiar with and as a result sometimes take a back seat and wait it out without trying it for themselves. By using a whiteboard table, data shows students are more willing to make an attempt at a problem and take a risk because it is less permanent. If they do make an error they can quickly erase it like it never happened and try again. I will also be able to circulate the room while students are working in groups and add ideas or questions to the group on the table itself to prompt their thinking. It makes the math more accessible and overall my goal is to help boost their confidence and not be afraid to give the math a try. Plus it just adds some fun to math class! The dividers will be used on test days to help maintain the integrity of the test data and to ensure students are not tempted to having wandering eyes.
