So much about this upcoming 2020-2021 school year is up in the air and unknown. Will we be virtual for awhile or will we transition to hybrid? Will we remain in school or will we be closed down again? Will students be excited, nervous, anxious? Regardless of where we learn and how long we're learning in that setting our students need the materials, visual aids and supports to be able to practice coping skills and meet their emotional and sensory needs. Pre-pandemic, classrooms had spaces with bean bags, sensory materials, timers and visual charts to provide students a comforting and safe space when they are experiencing a strong feeling or simply need a break from what the class is doing. If we are back in school physically, students will not be able to share these materials. If we are in school remotely, students may not have access at home to many of these tools. By funding this project, you're committing to helping up to 75 students who are working hard to identify their emotions, learn how to manage and process those emotions as well as learn and practice various coping skills to process and move on from strong emotions. As adults, we may rely on deep breathing, meditation apps, talking through our concerns with friends, etc. Our students are learning these same processing techniques! This project will fund 75 individual calming and coping kits. The kits will include timers, stress balls, pinwheels for practicing deep breaths, multiple fidgets and stretchy cords. This project also includes a small laminator, velcro and colorful cardstock to create (from home) engaging and supportive visuals, token boards, guides and incentive charts for students who may be practicing specific skills. Not being at school should not mean that students aren't practicing important life skills!
